BECAUSE WE CRY TOGETHER
Curated by emotional chaos
Bárbara Sanchez-Kane is known for her outstanding, politically engaged creations. The mexican designer is not afraid to point out issues around national identity, gender equality and expression or also immigration.
Her collections are loud, they draw attention towards deplorable state of affairs. Maybe therefore her brand is officially curated by emotional chaos.
Bárbara Sanchez-Kane not only expresses her political messages through fashion but also through activism and performance art. Recently she showed an exceptional performance piece featuring her girlfriend and singer Morena Valdés at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo, addressing violence towards women.
Watch the video below:
After the performance, Barbara Sanchez-Kane gave Interview the honor and answered burning questions concerning her performance:
I Have you always been a political person?
BSK We need to be political in our line of work.
I started SK as a need of expression addressing personal issues and the political climate that surrounds us. We can’t be blind and ignore what is happening.
Talking about the last performance “MACHO SENTIMENTAL VOL.2 “ presented at Palais de Tokyo during L’exposition Prince·sse·s des villes curated by Hugo Vitrani and Fabian Danesi, I decided to talk about the rise on violence against women in the world. One out of every three women in the world has suffered physical and / or sexual violence throughout their lives and at least 6 out of 10 Mexican women has faced an incident of violence, sometime in their life.
I Can you explain how the accessories in the video reflect themessage of your song?
BSK Performer Pepe Romero is wearing the cheese grater shoes. Cheese translated into Spanish “queso” means vagina in my hometown Mérida Yucatan. So Pepe represents pleasure, but an unwanted pleasure – one that you don’t ask for. He possesses you without permission. Your body became his temple of aggression.
We need to stop blaming what happens to us on us – no matter the circumstance –
“THE ONLY ONE GUILTY IS THE AGGRESSOR NOT YOU”.
Morena Valdés composed the song for the performance, she is a professional actress and singer and my current girlfriend. She represents pure love, she stands with me no matter the situation, making me stronger. The song expresses how she wants to take care of me and protect me against people or circumstances that surround our world.During the performance I invited the public to squeeze oranges into a cast made of my body. I exposed myself to the most vulnerable way.Unprotected I was, as people could be charged with desire or love to the most evil and perverse fantasies when they approached me with the oranges.
I wrote this after the performance:
Because we are still being exposed to such danger
Because we will not remain passive until such aggressions and violence
Because we will not get tired of the fight
Because we will not be silenced
Because we cry together.
I How did growing up in Mexico shape your art work?
BSK SK sculptural works conform a wardrobe lining the liminal catwalk from fantasy to reality. Influenced by Mexican contemporaneity and folklore and taking both to their ultimate unabashed expression to the extreme, SK creates a visual universe that is a homeland for rejects. Twisting its traditions to portray a new perception of beauty. Wielding a conceptual arsenal of poetic kitsch forms, SK relentlessly defies the usual comforting distinctions between male and female, natural and artificial, ugly and beautiful, art and fashion, attired and naked, high and low. Thus unsettled by this hybridization and shorn of our innocence, we thrust across the threshold of sentimentalism into a world of unbounded confidence and rare possibilities. The residents of this world are unashamed of all that we have been taught to hide: fear, slime, ugliness, miscegenation, and brutality. Their darkest selves have been mined to make them whole, and SK has turned them into ambassadors of a nation that belongs not to the beautiful but to the brave and achingly sensitive.
I Do you have a message for Trump?
BSK Stop separating families – they need to be together. Stop promoting violence and hatred creating an atmosphere that only promotes fear.
